NYC Land Rover dealer charges US$500 per hour for service » US$452.27 for an oil change, before tax

For reference, dealerships and independent mechanics typically charge between $100 and $300 per hour to work on cars. Rates vary based on location, car brand, and whether it’s a specialty shop or a more general mechanic. Dealerships are typically more expensive than local garages, but there are exceptions. According to CarMD, the average labor cost nationally in 2022 was around $142, and I’ve spent between $95 and $160 per hour at many independent mechanics over the years because of my questionable vehicle choices. High-end dealerships are a bit more costly, as to be expected; Porsche South Shore on Long Island charges $225 an hour, and Porsche Manhattan bills an eyebrow-raising $349. But Land Rover Brooklyn’s $500 rate is more than 40% higher than that.

House Republicans censured Adam Schiff (D-CA). He couldn’t be happier.

LA Times »

Schiff, a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Dianne Feinstein, didn’t fight particularly hard against the effort to formally chastise him. He told The Times he initiated no conversations with Republicans in the last week to sway their votes; he’s called the censure a “badge of honor” and has already begun using the free publicity to fuel his Senate campaign.

“Roosevelt said you can judge a person by the enemies they make,” Schiff said in an interview with The Times on Wednesday before the vote. “By that standard, I’m doing pretty damn well.”

“I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.”

Apple sue for all the marbles, err, apples

Wired » The Fruit Union Suisse is 111 years old. For most of its history, it has had as its symbol a red apple with a white cross—the Swiss national flag superimposed on one of its most common fruits. But the group, the oldest and largest fruit farmer’s organization in Switzerland, worries it might have to change its logo, because Apple, the tech giant, is trying to gain intellectual property rights over depictions of apples, the fruit.

The Guardian » Leshie Chandrapala is one of the hundreds of members of the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK group who have expressed their anger and frustration over a newly released video appearing to show a Christmas party at the Conservative party headquarters during Covid restrictions in 2020. Leshie told the Guardian: ‘we are living a nightmare’ and said she felt a ‘physical sickness’ after watching the video for the first time.
